93 YJ five speed syncro problem #791646 02/21/07 10:24 PM

I recently picked up a 93 YJ which has the 4th gear syncromesh out. As I am taking the tranny out to replace the clutch I am tempted to take it apart and repair it myself. In looking at the exploded parts diagram in my manual it looks do able. I have sucessfully repaired truck and tractor transmissions over the years so I have a clue on what to expect. Is there anything odd I should look for internally? Any special tools needed or any tricks to disasemble or assembly these transmissions?
Or if its an ugly one to work on I would welcome any advice on a good reasonable shop in Northern California where I can carry it in.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

' I had never rebuilt a manual transmission until I replaced the synchro's in a 91 YJ. It was an AX-15. I was able to do it with nothing more than an exploded diagram and a digital camera. A decent press is required, other than that no special tools. I now have a Factory service manual that completely covers the AX-15 and AX-5 (if you have a 4-cyl) and I highly recommend you get one for the very detailed instructions they contain. The only problem is there are so many details it can be intimidating when you read it, But if you do as BJ says and just do the basics, it's not that big a deal. Keep the work area very clean and all parts laid out in order, pictures at all stages of disassembly from multiple angles can be a very big help. Good luck!

Fred I have one myself.. "Before" pictures can be a huge help when r&ring a head or other parts on a strange vehicle.
Just put a coolant pump on a honda... what a beast! Even with photos it did not make the job any easier. Honda didn't put that pump in a easy place that is for sure.
