1991 2.6 Petrol Strange Noise and Max RPM #792660 02/25/07 10:32 PM

Hi Guys!

My 2.6 petrol Pajero has got a wierd rough Whirring noise coming from the gearbox / Clutch I think... If I put the clutch in, it stops, but if the clutch is out while in neutral, 1,2,3 or 5, it makes the noise... nothing though in 4th.

Any Ideas?

Also, just wondering what the max RPM of this engine is... Mine tops out at 4000, which can be a bit of a problem if you need to overtake. It hasnt really bothered me as in general it is going well and I dont drive it like a racing car. Just wondering if this is normal, and if not, what the reason could be.

Motor has almost 280000km, but still seems strong!

Any help will be appreciated.

The engine should climb to well above 4K rpm...you may have some carburetor or ignition issues to check in to.

As for the transmission noise, I think you'll find yourself needing another soon. Noise from these boxes is never good. The reason there is no noise in 4th is because of the direct lock up between engine and output shaft (1:1 gear) and no sychros have to move.

Sorry if this is not what you want to hear. I have to replace the transmission in my Riader, too.

Thanks rxinhed

I appreciate the feedback. Was hoping it was not that bad, but what can you do?

I think it is way out of my league to try do this myself so I will take the old girl to the mechanic and have him open her up!

Getting the Wheeling Fever
What I would give to have an Rx-3 to play with...I got bored the other night and spent about 4 hours on YouTube watching Rotary engine videos. One can doubt if they wish, but those engines are incredible!!! Especially ANY video of the Mazda 787B, the warm-up audio of that engine is like a symphonic masterpiece...Wow!

My apologies, we return now to regularly scheduled programming [/hijack]

I once saw and heard a Mazda 20B 3 rotor motor. Whole motor minus intake and exhaust bits was smaller than a pony keg. Had well over 500hp in a 1900lb homebuilt, birdcage tube frame, two seater "sports" car. 12000rpms and smooth, I mean really smooth, with the most Gawd awful noise you can imagine, and flame out the straight pipes. However, like all roto's, it only took one overheat and it was toast, or more accurately, the various rotor housing and end/middle plate pieces of the engine sandwich looked kind of like potato chips instead of nice and flat and all sealed up. And there are 3 tips per rotor, and nine tips per engine, and I think I remember that the tip seals each have about 9 parts. That's 81 little finicky thingy dingys, each of which has to be installed just right, and you haven't even touched the edge seals yet, or the lobe seals either.

It's sort of like a good old piston engine Cessna 172, and a solid fuel rocket. The rocket is fast as stink, and makes a glorious smoke column all the way up to clean out of sight, and the sound of the engine is so loud it can kill you, but you can only fly it once. The old slow and ugly Cessna will fly, and fly, and fly, and fly.
