Why cant you relocate leaf springs to lift the jeeps? #793196 02/27/07 02:56 PM

I have a 93 Wrangler and looks like just putting the springs on top and putting new pads there would lift it big time, My first jeep and im sure there are reasons why they have not. Any jeep-a-holics know the answer?

the modification you speak of is called a "spring over axle" lift

simply as it implies puting the spring over the axle instead of under it.

i dont know a lot about this since i'm an XJ man but i know it gives you a lot more lift than it looks like and i think axle wrap may be a problem.

there are a lot of threads on spring over axle lifts (SOA) and if you do a search or look in the archives you will be able to read up a lot on this subject.

spring over swaps are a great way to gain about 5.5" of lift, and they flex real good. the problem is for a newb, its expensive. ata glance, you would think all you need is a welder and some new spring perches. but there are steering issues that need to be corrected with it as you can hit the spring on the tie rod under flex. you have to buy new, longer shocks, the transfer case will need addressing as the stock slip yoke is no good and you will need a longer driveshaft. brake lines become too short, and have to be replaced, and if you want a sway bar you will need longer links. im not sure what it takes to keep the track bars functioning properly with it, and you will get nasty axle wrap and break or bend your rear springs without the addition of a traction bar. soon after you convert to spring over you will find yourself wanting new stiffer springs possibly with a little lift.

all in all its a simple way to lift a vehicle, but the modifications it takes to finish the lift get pricy and complicated. without fab skillz, you can spend upwards of $1000 on a done right spring over.

these days the performance you can get out of a $400-600 spring under axle lift is good enough that if you arent going too crazy or if you are doing it for the look or just to run some trails with mild rock crawling, they are great and very affordable.
