I am starting and engine swap and decided to pull the transfer case and transmission from my 77 CJ7. The bolts connecting the skid plate to the frame turned easy enough on the way out but the corrosion in the bolt holes was so bad there aren't any threads left in the frame to run a bolt into. Anybody have a fix for this. I suppose I could use some self tapping bolts but the frame is pretty thin for that. I have a feeling I am pretty screwed here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jack

I'd bore out the hole to a size a bolt would go thru...then look for a way to insert a NUT with a handle welded to it.. The handle would serve as a wrench holding the nut in place while torquing the bolt.. Many trailer hitches and nerf bars are installed thisaway.. You must search for a hole to insert the nut and handle into..or make one yourself if the frame is toatlly boxed. Big Jim

Jack...when I had my transmission rebuilt the shop snapped 4 bolts holding the skid plate to the frame. They were at odds too as far as what to do...they actually had to cut like a 2x2 hole in the frame (welded back) so they could put new bolts up through and secure them with nuts and washers on the inside of the frame. Yes...a royal pain in the butt. Hey, you should try changing out rusted body mounts on these things. It's another absolute friggin nightmare.

drill it bigger: free

run a new bolt: not quite free
being able to put it back together: priceless

The frame prolly wouldn't be heavy enough gage to keep from stripping out if it's rusted away at that location. Needs a nut and washer tacked behind it. Or plate welded and drilled and tapped behind it.

what he's saying is his existing nut welded to the frame is stripped out.
well if you use that same hole and just tap it a little bigger, you would have PLENTY of meat for holding the crossmember on.
its a piece of cake!

From the orig. post it looks like all he's got there to bolt to is frame - ref. "frame to thin to bolt to" and "threads thru frame are gone". If there are nuts back there you're right - easy fix. And you might well be...

In other words, this job is just going to be a royal PIA any way you look at it. Why Chrysler came up with the bright idea of threading the FRAME is beyond me...just as they did with the BODY MOUNTS. It's just asinine. Why not use a simple bolt-through, washer and locking nut design altogether? That's how my Ranger is and it's a piece of cake to drop the skid plates/trans and replace the body mounts.
