Well my friend has a 94 4runner and he told me his headgasket just went. He tried to get the dealer to honor the 3.0 head gasket recall but they told him the head gasket was already replaced in 1998.
Apparently his engine is screwed(I haven't looked at it yet) b/c he just got a quote from a very reputable shop in my town called japanese auto masters for $5-6,000. $2 grand for the remanufactured long block and the rest labor. But that just sounds a little much. I would swap a new engine in for him for cheap like I did for another friend last winter, but I don't want to jeopardize my gpa to work on trucks again lol.
How much can he get a whole new, or used engine for and how much should labor cost to swap it in?

It has been a while since I have been around - but I just went thru this 2 years ago - and now again. Fortunately it is covered by the warranty of the manufacture.
That is about the right price, or at least what I got quoted originally -- the motor runs around $2000 to $2500 depending on the place and warranty (I found one with a 3 year 100,000) and the rest is labor - -$6K sounds a tiny bit high - but then it depends on what they can salvage - power steering pump, oil cooler, harmonic blancer, plugs, wires, water pump, etc. All those little things can be a big suprise in the end.
I was fortunate enough to have a friend with a shop and someone who is a toyota specialist whom wanted to make some extra cash. However in talking to the shop, again, about replacing this motor with the new one - - the numbers are about the same as you got quoted.
I am just glad I do not have to pay for any of it (this time).
You know, at that price, you *might* be able to get a 3.4 swap done(as has been mentioned)...it is just a thot. I wish I would have looked into it more, but when my engine when, I was in a space where I didn't have the time nor was I in a situation to have it done.

Wow, I'd think 5 grand would get him a 3.4 swap.

There's 2 on the block at fleabay right now for $25-700 range. One's in NJ, the other in FL.
AlaskaToy down in KY had two running blocks F/S, but I don't know if he's still got 'em, or what he wants for them, as he didn't put the price in his post.
Local machine shop up here wanted $1500 for a 3.0 overhaul a few years ago. The ones on the block right now are already done.
$5K? Ouch. He could part out the truck almost, and be ahead.
He hasn't tapped you for labor yet?

yeah, that's what i was thinking. he offered to sell me the whole truck for about $800 bucks and it's in great condition except for the engine, but i don't have anywhere to keep it. i already have 2 vehicles as is. he just called me about an hour ago and told me he bought an 87 22R-ET 4Runner w/ no rust on it w/ a new engine for 3 grand. it's an auto though . still not a bad price for a rust free first gen 4runner that comes w/ a 3 year warranty on the engine. heres the truck link But if any of you guys are interested in a 94 4Runner w/ a blown engine let me know.

Have him post the truck out on your local craigslist and in the F/S section here then; reference this thread.
