Getting the Wheeling Fever
RIG=1989 Dodge Raider, 3.0 V6, Auto, 73K miles Bought it used 2 weeks ago. Enigine runs smooth at idle and at all speeds.
Situation = Driving at 65mph about 4 miles stop did an errond (10min) drove back home at about 1.5 miles in the return trip it stalls (no warning lights are on) turn the key fires up drive home no problems about 6 blocks from home I take a speed bump (at about 25mph) Check enging light comes on and goes off just as quick. It has done this 4 times now. The time driven varries have gone as far as 10 miles before. Changed the fuel filter problem still not cured. Where do I start trouble shooting? Previous owner stated that it has been doing that for a while. HELP

1) Check all vacuum lines to make sure they're not cracked and in place where they should be.
2) Check the EGR system operation.
3) Check the vacuum switch on the front of the intake manifold near the thermostat - it has 2 vacuum hoses and often is cracked - even though it looks ok.
4) Check the rotor and distributor cap.
5) Check ignition timing.
6) Check the o2 sensor (it's about time to replace it).
7) Clean the ISC and throttle body.
8) Check the resistance values on the IAC, TPS and AFM.
9) Put in a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and as a last resort, send the injectors out for cleaning.
10)Another last resort would be to replace the fuel pump.

Hi,

If it stalls like someone just turned off the ignition switch. (total power loss) then my vote is the ignition coil or the black transistor mounted to the same bracket. I would recommend cleaning all of those connections around that area and see if it goes away. If not, start looking for the whole ignition module in a junkyard or see if someone on this board has a good one to sell. (I had six extra at one time but they're all gone now that I'm a diesel head)

I had the same thing happen to me on my first '89 LWB and it drove me crazy for 2 months. Couldn't figure it out myself, went through three mechanics until I found one who made solving the problem his personal quest!

One other thing. Before the stall happens, are there a bunch of clicking noises coming from the passenger foot well? Also, when it does it again, put your nose down in the passenger foot well and see if it smells like fish. If either of these checks are positive, it's probably time to rebuild the ECU. If it smells like fish, make sure you pull it apart and check the condition of the printed circuit board before you ship it off to be repaired. If it's corroded and rusted to all get out, it won't be rebuildable.

Found the problem It was the high tension wire on the coil..it was rusted with only a small area making connection. I did a major tune-up too. But of course I didnt find that until I had replaced about 7 miles of vacuum line (never hurts i guess) the line was fairly weathered. Thanks for the input it gave me a place to start!!!

Back to the same problem, I replaced the coil & igniter assy. in addition to Frank's laundry list above. Cleaned almost every electrical connection under the hood. I finally gave up and took it to the Robbers oops I mean the dealer. As soon as they give me a diagnoses I'll spread it around.
Thanks for your suggestions.

I'll guess at the ignition switch for the kewpie doll prize.

PCC Sorry but not a winner. OK here is what the dealer found after 3 days of "troubleshooting" The wire coming from the 30amp MFI fuse (the box next to the POS Batt term)had several breaks in it they replaced the black/yellow wire coming from the fuse to umm wherever. They did check the ECU and fixed a bad ground there. I just got back from a 1.5 hr ride taking bumps and driving it hard trying to replicate the conditions under which it was stalling ...and guess what NO STALL. Maybe I'm happy too soon????

Need a Spot
I see this is an old thread. But I'll see if anybody is still around on it.

I have an 89 Raider manual V6. It cuts out at about the exact same time after starting up. It will totally die, like it is flooded. After a few minutes, after shutting off, it starts back up and runs fine for as long as I want to drive. If I dont wait a few minutes, it will die out quickly after starting.
Doesn't matter if it sits in the driveway, or I'm going highway speeds, or anything in between. Seems like its about 15 minutes after starting. I already did the fuel pump/filter and Idle control.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
