Getting the Wheeling Fever
My clutch has been making a very strange metal on metal squeaking for about 6 months. Checking it out, it is the clutch master cylinder ram vibrating against the clutch throwout lever that goes into the bellhousing. There is just enough gap between the 2 metal parts that as the clutch throwout lever vibrates it makes an annoying metal squeaking sound (don't know how much movement should be normal on the lever, does excessive movement of the lever indicate anything? It moves 1-2 mm's while the engine is running).

I'm thinking that if I can adjust the clutch just a little tighter, the 2 parts will just make contact and the sound will go away if there is no gap between them.

Any help?

i think you mean the slave cyl rod is contacting the shift fork. the master cyl is on the firewall. there's 2 ways you can try adjusting it. 1 is on the back of the clutch pedal. there is a locknut (12mm IIRC) and 16 mm brass nut. unlock the lock nut and then turn the brass one. this only changes the throw of the pedal though. another thing you can try is to loosen the bolts on the slave cyl. move it forwards/backwards a little, and then retighten the bolts.

Yes, that is exactly what I meant. I've tried adjusting the threaded rod behind the clutch pedal and it doesn't seem to move much. I'll try moving the slave cylinder on the bellhousing. If that doesn't work, maybe I'll try greasing it to stop the noise? The noise is so annoying that I'll keep the clutch petal to the floor even when I'm not in gear just to stop the noise.

I have an anoyoing little chirping noise coming from my clutch as well. I notice it when the engine is idling. If I depress the clutch slightly it goes away. I figure the through-out bearing may not have been greased sufficiently?

This is supposedly not uncommon on the V6 trannys. I don't know if its the bearing or the fork that makes the noise. Mine used to do it too but hasn't done it since I replaced the clutch w/ new bearings and I greased the fork fingers. I've heard of people removing the fork boot and spraying lube in there to make it go away, but I don't know if that's a great idea. Lube getting on the clutch itself wouldn't be good.

Good to know I'm not the only one.

Mine is definitely not the throwout bearing but the contact between the slave and the lever. You can put you hand on the lever when it's idling in neutral and it moves slightly while vibrating. If you push in the clutch every so slightly, it forces the slave to make contact with the lever and the chirping stops because it closes the gap.

Found this in the FAQ archive:

"PITA was trying to set the clutch pedal so that it had just enough prssure on it to stop that damn chirping. I can barely touch the pedal with my foot and it stops but I just can't seem to get it with an adjustment."
