Body Damage is Cool
A few weeks ago the tranny gear indicator on the dash started acting up. Mostly showed 3 no matter what gear I was in. Eventually would move to D (the actual gear I was in). Sometimes it would just jump all around, stop, then jump around ...

Then one day the tranny seemed to be shifting back and forth between D and 3, but I wasn't sure because the tach didn't seem to change with it.

This morn the tranny stayed in 3 the whole way to work (so did the dash indicator) even tho the shifter was in D.

Anyone seen this before?
The tranny ECM maybe?

I'm searching my FSM CD to see if the dash indicator is driven by the tranny ECM or the shifter switch, as it may be a clue.

First thing I would do is check the shifter linkages. Maybe something is bent/worn and needs to be corrected. That's the first thing that I'd do because it's the simplest. Next is I'd check the fluid level.

The shifter is not moving nor is there any play.
It's the dash electronic gear display that jumps around like it has a mind of it's own.

i would suspect the mode switch on the transmission. sometimes also called gear selector sensor or a combination of the two. essentially it tells the trans computer what gear you have selected with the shifter. if the switch sends the wrong info to the trans computer, it sends the wrong directions to the electronic's part of the transmission, while the mechanical gear selector has the trans doing things for the gear selected.
anyway, confusion reigns, and there are several symptoms inclulding the dash gear selector lights going haywire.

people take them off and clean them with some good results. it didn't work for me (it was just worn). and i ended up replacing it with new. if you are doing the work yourself, it might be worth the experience as it was for me. if you pay someone else and you have tested it, replacing probably is the better option.

here's a thread of mine that has a lot links on this that may help you decide.

That's exactly the conclusion I've come to, especially after I looked under and saw the switch was outside the vehicle exposed to the elements.

Going to tear into it tommorow.
