Getting the Wheeling Fever
Quote
I have been working on my 93 4x4. The truck has always ran cold but heater works fast and fine. Put in a new thermostat, flushed and filled radiator. Yesterday I ran it for the longest yet, about 6 hours at 60mph, with an hour break in the middle. The temp gauge has alway only gotten about an eight above the cold line. During the trip yesterday it got to about 1/2 inch above cold. When I stopped at home, the radiator was gurgling air into the overflow resevoir. No steam just gurgling air. Wondering what it could be?? Also I have bad exhaust leaks in the cat and a tick in the engine.A friend told me to check the rad. cap to be sure it it the correct one and vents at the proper temp. Gas milage is crazy too, in town I get 14-16 on that long trip I got 20. Wondering if that has to do with it FINALLY maybe got to proper operating temp.??

This is my problem. Yesterday I stuck a oil thermometer on the block next to the thermostat and checked my Ohms in my ECT. It read 84 Ohms at 180-190 degrees, again the coolant resevoir was gurgling air bubbles!!! Is this only a bad sensor? I assume from the chart that the sensor thinks my engine is minus 60 degrees or so, wouldnt this make it tend to make my truck run hotter, if it thinks its cold? Yet my temp gague only gets 1/4 inch above the cold line. Please help me diagnose, could it be something else.

I could be wrong but if the ECT thinks it's -60 outside then it should go into full "choke" mode and run super rich. If the ECT isn't meeting the FSM specs then replace it. That could be another part of your poor mpg problems.

That is what I was thinking, I looked at the chart in the FSM and just visualized an 84 ohm reading, (it only goes to 40 I think), so it would think it was mighty cold. running super rich would rob power too, wouldnt it?

Definitely. Poor mpg, poor full throttle acceleration, and a completely clogged/shot CAT.

There are two temp sensors - one for the ECU and one for the temp gauge.
It's unusual for them to fail.

Here's the graph for an earlier truck - this is the ECU sensor, not the gauge sensor (which may be different) -

Notice the scale is in Kohms, not Ohms.
600 ohms = 150 degrees or so
80 ohms would be super hot.

Coolant res shouldn't gurgle.. That's bad.. Maybe as simple as a bad radiator cap if you're lucky. Are you losing water?

I checked the sensor with a standard cheap multi-meter. The sensor on the engine just below the Rad. hose going to the thermostat with the green 2 wire connector. What is the conversion between kOhms and Ohms. If it is running super hot, why did the engine block read 180-190 on the thermometer? I am not losing coolant, however the strange thing is the coolant in the res. is rusty brown and the coolant in the rad. is nice and green. Anyone know why they would not comingle?

New ECT, seems a little more power. No more coolant gurgling in the resevoir. Still runs with the temp gauge about 1/8 to 1/4 above cold line. Putting in a new O2 sensor tomorrow. Thanks for all the advice. My old truck is a work in progress. I am a newbie, but am learning alot from the help of this forum. Thanks all.
