My good buddy has an 87 runner with a 22-re with about 250K miles on it. I have an 87 pickup with a 22-r and about 170K on it. my buddy is selling his runner but isnt sure what price to ask and he knows that i want to buy it. its a good truck other than some body damage to the back that he did. everything works fine... im kinda torn on buying it or not. it would be nice to have the extra back seat and power steering. should i buy it? and if i do what should i do with my truck? cuz i know ill probably fix up the runner and hardly drive my truck unless i come up with a plan for it. any opinions would be helpful.

If you want more room and convienance of a rear seat, than definately buy it. The only down side of the Runner is you wont get as good as gas mileage since it is heavier, not a large drop but usually a few less mpg's. With 250k on the engine, you should rebuild it, especvially if you plan on keeping it for a long time. You should be ablke to rebuild it for under $500, or under $1k if you do a mild performance rebuild. A buddy of mine rebuilt his '84(6 months before it was stolen) using enginebuilders performance parts, the gains were noticeable, he was able to keep up with me in my modded 3.0, when I used to leave him far behind climbing the Sierras. I think he only spent $600 in parts.

As for your rig, I would clean it up, i.e., fix all the little things like tears, paint chips, ripped carpet etc., if you have them and sell it. You should be able to get close to $3k for a clean good running 2nd gen Toyota here in CA. You can then use the money to build the Runner.

i definitely plan to rebuild it if i buy it. which is good that i do have my truck. i plan on building it up pretty good. i dont think selling the pickup is an option because it was my dads and he would probably shoot me if i sold it. my buddy doesnt realize the potential of toyotas otherwise he wouldnt sell it. hahaha. doesnt appreciate them i guess which is good for me cuz hell probably give it to me for a good price. thanks for the reply btw

I've been considering buying a first gen runnerand have been looking at them on my Ebay and Autotrader. You can probably get a pretty good idea of what your buddys truck might be worth from browsing some for sale ads/auctions.

My problem is that i'm in CT and most of the nicer runners are in places other than Connecticut. so i have to consider the additional cost of shipping the vehicle. If you know the history of your friends truck and it is close that is a defenite plus. good Luck with whatever you decide.

If selling the truck isn't an option, then keep it as your daily driver and use the Runner as your wheeler. This way you can beat on the Runner and keep the truck clean, which should keep your Dad happay as well. Also having another rig to get parts in is nice when your wheeling rig is down for repairs.
