Getting the Wheeling Fever

i have a '96 rodeo, and was talking to a friend about getting an exhaust for it, because it just doesnt sound like a truck. He said to just remove the muffler, out in straight pipe, leave the cat and put a glassback on. Pro's/Cons?

and today the check engine light came on, pulled the code, and its 1406, a manufacture code, and ideas?
