Need a Spot
Hey guys, i have a 1984 toyota pickup 22r carburated. Last night as i was driving it started to get hot, i let it cool down and it was fine and hasn't done it since. Once i started it back up the choke turned on and then stayed on. Also when i drive for awhile and then shut it off it wants to keep running. How do i get the choke to shut off? IT STAYS ON ALL THE TIME! CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE?

Thanks for any help

If you decide to rebuild the carb get the kit from advance auto parts instead of the NAPA kit. It's cheaper and has more small parts like washers and o-rings that I didn't see in the NAPA kit.

I used to think I could rebuild carbs. But man, some of those parts I've found to be spring loaded in the pissed-off position!
What I'm sayin is, rebuilding carbs are more than just cleaning and new gaskets/rubber parts. It's alot about final adjustments. Not that you can't do it now. I'm just not that keen, and having a local pro do it for $225 is good for me. I know it's guarenteed and done right.

The rebuild on a 20R is harder than the 22R; more parts to lose! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Shotgun, welcome to the board. You posted on the grocery getter site earlier. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> Not to knock them; they have their place too. GOBS of older trucks around here. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

But then again some carbs don't need to be completely readjusted either. Lots of times it is something as simple as dirt, trash, or an old rotten diaphragm that's leaking down. Even if you can't adjust every parameter per the FSM (Which is very thorough BTW) you can do the majority of the work and pay someone else $40 to set it up for you. You can buy all the parts yourself including the cleaning vat from Gunk for about $50. Just make sure you set the float level correctly.

jeeez do i ever feel stupid...the only thing that was wrong with my truck was one of the belts ripped. DUHHH <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

I should have known, started getting hot=fan off, charge light on=alternator not working, im not sure about the choke thing though because i cleaned it and now it works as well, im not sure if the belt caused that to.

but thanks for the replies <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Getting the Wheeling Fever
So it is time to rebuild the stock carb on my 1982 22R.

Here is the problem, after it sits for a day/evening/night I first start it up it runs and idles fine. I drive it for awhile or do a hot turn off and restart and it won't idle. It feels like is not getting any fuel unless I hold the pedal in and even then it idles rough but runs fine going down the road at driving speeds.

So as I pull this apart what should I be looking for as the culprit to this problem?

Thanks, Brett
