How are the auto hubs on nineties Monteros activated? Vacuum, electric or none of the above?

Just put it in 4 wheel drive and it's engages. Most of the answers to your questions are in the owners manual. Did you get one from the dealer?

My hub question is not addressed in the manual. The "none of the above" response surprises me because I thought all "automatic" hubs require some force to activate them. For example my ?93 Dodge Dakota uses vacuum to operate the hubs and my ?06 Mazda B2600 uses an electrical signal.

I think the twisting action of the CVs turn something inside to lock.
I like my manual hubs.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

If it's like our USA 1992+ (Gen II) models, the hubs are permanently "locked." There is a "center axle disconnect" that is vacuum operated, and actuates when you engage 4wd. It basically disconnects one of the CV axles from the center diff.

The Gen II and III hubs are always engaged. The front Half-shafts are always spinning. As noted above there is a vacuum actuated clutch that dissengages the front differential. However, the spider gears in the differential are always spinning too.
