As some of you can tell, I just bought my first toyota.... So I am trying to find out all the info I can on it. Can someone tell me what the difference is between my 88 and an 89. I had a chance to buy a 90 but i got a great deal on an 88. Did I mess up?? I see on so many other sites with sayings like "89-95" toyota pickups rule. What is so much better about them??? Just bored and figured someone would let me know the difference!! Maybe i should just shut up and me happy I got an 88 for $900 bucks..

You did not specify pickup verses 4Runner, nor is it in your profile.... so I'll assume you mean a pickup? In '89 they had a model change of the pickups (between '88 and 89 model years). 4Runners are a little more ocnfusing because in March of '89, they relased the "new" body style as an early '90 model. So in 4Runners it goes 85-89 and 90-95. This sometimes makes things confusing if you have an '89 4Runner b/c parts stores get it wrong a lot.
In both case, the drivetrain is identical for everything from '85 to '95. The difference is in body stuff, some brakes and electrical things. This means that for the important stuff, it dosn't matter. I think that on this particular sub-forum, people prefer the pre-90s models. That's my own preference too... I don't care how nice and posh the 90s Runnerss are, that will *never* beat out the removable top feature of the earlier generation.

So did the body change at all from a 88 to 89? Can you also tell me what the SR5 is?

Body changed between 88 and 89, yes. SR5 is a trim option package. Usually, but not always, sees nice wheels/tires, better interior appointments like bucket seats, console, PW, PL, sometimes sunroof.

The '89 to '95 body style is just a tiny bit bigger and overall nicer looking (to some) and the xtra cabs actually had seats in the back. Just curious, does yours have the 22re or v6?
88' Xtra cab, 22RE, 5 spd, alumi flat deck, 3" BL, 35" muds...awaiting SAS.

The radio is also in a much better location than the earlier models. I drove my friends 87 for a couple of days and it was not usuable (to close to floor).

seems to me that the pre 89 trucks have more frame rust problems, than the newer style. But that is not something I am sure about.

I prefer the '84 to '88 body style. Radio position unusable???? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> True some options where better on the third gen. Rear seats on extracab models, kinda nice but too small. Slightly better efi. ONE PIECE BOX SIDES that rust slower. Just my humble opinion.
