I have a 2wd S10 with the vortec motor with low miles that I am thinking about swapping into my 91 extended cab to relace the aging 3.0 I have. Any thought's good or bad to this.

Em...I HATE S10's. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />
I don't think it'll be plug-n-play either.
Did I say I HATE S10's?
I already told you about Kutter's mill in your other post.
EDIT: If you go tossing a bigger mill in there, then you're going to need to think about how the drivetrain will hold up, and if that needs to be an upgrade as well.
Remember, 4x4 in caps = $X$ (per Roger)

some people like the 4.3, some hate it. I did a 4.3 TBI swap.... hated it.
Brian K. Gallus I have nothing important to say.

I am familiar with some 4wheelin friends putting 4.3's into jeeps and samuri's and toyota's but none that have done a swap with the 3.0. What is the difference between a standard 4.3 and the vortec motors. Like I said it has low miles and lots of power.

im gonna have to agree with the above. i had a 4.3 in my first truck (90 GMC S-15 Jimmy. GRENADED rear pinion). it was a really weak, got terrible milage, and had problems with overheating. overall, i would never, ever own one again.

What is the difference between a standard 4.3 and the vortec motors. Like I said it has low miles and lots of power. There wouldn't be any difference between the 22re conversion and the 3.0. You can buy adapters for either drivetrain, you will need new engine mounts, and I am nopt sure if it will clear w/o a body lift, I have only seen them in 1st and 2nd gen Toys all of which had 3" BL's. A buddy of mine has the a Bravado 4.3 in has Toyota Trail Blazer and he hasn't had much problems with it, after I added a tranny cooler and an electric pusher fan to it. The mpg's aren't the greatest, but then again he is turning 40's and always has his foot in it.
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed

Advance Adapters has written a manual on swapping non-Toyota engines into Toyota trucks that they sell for $10. I believe they cover the 4.3 extensively. They sell transmission and bellhousing adapters. Same with Downey Off Road Mfg.. Last time I looked into it it cost about $4000 to do the swap. That included the cost of an engine, custom radiator, b/h adapter, exhaust, motor mounts, VSS sensor and sensor adapter, ect. Of course if you are a good scrounger and fabricator you can cut that price down a lot. I'm holding out till I can afford a Toyota 3.4 and a nice first generation 4runner to put it in.--Matt

Just some reprints of old rag articles and advertisements. Nothing more. I was highly disappointed when I received mine. I had about $4300 into my 4.3 swap... Wasn't happy with it.

The AA manual is not an exhaustive resource, but if you are starting from nothing it might give you a leg up, particularly in understanding their products. You could do the same by poking around their website and calling their tech department. If you are about to spend $4k on a swap $10 is not much to get a boost up the learning curve. -- Matt
