I have recently purchased a '99 Trooper Luxury with chrome power folding and heated side mirrors. Unfortunately the glass was broken in the driver's-side mirror when I bought it. I have called about 10 different glass companies and have received different answers concerning the availability of replacement heated glass. Everyone claimed they had a mirror piece that would fit but no one could give me a guarantee that it was heated since no one was familiar with this vehicle. Has anyone run into this issue or know the setup inside one of these mirrors? Is there just a plain piece of glass that sticks to a heated pad of some sort, or does it take a special glass that has the heat strips formed onto the back of the mirror? The Isuzu dealer I spoke with has replacement glass for $90 which I'm sure would work, but most of the glass companies are quoting me $30-$40 installed. One of the part numbers I was given from two of the glass folks is 2299. I would really like to have the heated mirror operational, but $90 is a little steep, and I would hate to spend $40 without the guarantee of the heat function. Any ideas? Thanks, Tim

I doubt, but don't know for sure, that the mirror is anything special. Then again I would think any auto glass shop should know if their glass can take a heating element.

If you are truly worried you could try a salvage yard or Ebay. While only the luxury models came with folding mirrors, almost all Troopers of your vintage came with heated mirrors. Thus the used market should have plenty of options.

if you go to the official isuzu online parts site
you will discover that the heated and non-heated versions have different part numbers for all applications.

can't you just look at what you got and see what's heated and what's not?

The folding mirror button is located right next to the heated mirror button, above the mirror adjustment toggle. Maybe only available as an option?

I guess I could take out the glass to see if there is a heat element built into the back of the glass, but I'm paranoid that I'll break something since I don't really know how the assembly is constructed. I don't want to have to replace the whole thing if it breaks (big $, even used). I might just take it to a glass shop and have them take out the old glass to inspect, then either order the regular glass from them or the heated glass from the dealer and have them install it.

The heating element is a rather cumbersome piece behind the mirror and it's got silicone all around it on the backside.

The mirror just pops on to the adjuster assembly.
It's kind of nerve racking to remove one, but you just
reach behind it and pop it off... it's held on in several places, but once one is free, the others come easily.

Try sending Jerry Lemond a note at jlemond@bellsouth.net

I think he has the replacement glass with the heaters.
If not, he can get them for you (factory parts, not aftermarket) and will do so much cheaper than you'll get them at the dealer.

He can also give you some tips and advice on removing
the old ones and installing the new ones.

So it sounds like the glass is separate from the heating element? So maybe a glass shop could just only replace the plain glass by prying off the old glass from the separate heating assembly. I'm assuming my heater/defroster still works on my mirror.

I'll try to email Jerry on this one.

NO THE HEATING ELEMENT IS MADE TO THE BACK OF THE GLASS AND CANNOT BE SEPERATED , IT IS PLUGGED IN WITH A SMALL TWO WIRE CONNECTOR WITH THE WIRES MOLDED TO THE BACK SIDE OF THE MIRROR.. JERRY
