Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ihave a 84 CJ-7 4.2 I-6 with a auto trans. Will a 304 V-8 bolt up to my trans? How hard would it be to do this conversion? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

Body Damage is Cool
That tranny is a 904 or 999 torqueflight. It will bolt up but...that trans is not built for v8 power.
I believe it can be beefed to handle a v8.

The TF999 can be beefed up fairly easy with a heavy duty kit. Unless you're into auto trannies, it will cost you some to get it done at a shop.

I have a TF999 behind the AMC 360 V8 in my CJ. The only problem I had initially was burning the narrow clutch ring in the torque converter. That contaminated the tranny fluid, which screwed up the tranny. When I had the tranny rebuilt with the heavy duty parts (and the torque converter replaced), I had the operating line for the locking clutch clamped off, so it never locks now. That costs me about 10% in fuel mileage, but it'w worth it to me not to have to worry about it.

1977 CJ-7, fiberglass body, AMC 360 w/ headers, DUI ignition, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4150 carb, TF999, Dana 300, 4.56 gears lockers, York air comp, 4" susp lift, 2" body lift, BFG 35" M-T tires, Megashifter, AGR pump & box, REP8000 winch.
