About 3 years ago there was a thread about the LSD/Lockers for the rear of the gen 2s.
[*]529088 [/list] I do not think I have this link right. The original question had been asked by Scottie.

It is clear we did not get them here, but has it been determined if any country got them or are they just pretty pictures in the FSM.

There have been many recent posts about the low air-pressure locker in the rear of Gen II's...something I'd mistaken for electrically locked.

Clay (52degrees) have a Gen II rear axle in his Gen I 4-door. Others have done the swap for the disc brakes.

what is the question? air lockers did come in most SR's from 1992 to 1999, with varying ratios and bolt patterns. they operate on about 5 psi and have an electric detection switch built in; courtesy of mitsubishi

if you are asking about a hybrid LSD and Locker in one unit, I have heard rumors about having them overseas, but never saw one here in the US.

Correct, I am trying to find where overseas. Once I know where and if they were actually delivered to some country then I can get one.
So far they are rumors but no one has said, "I got one".
They have been in the books for over 10 years, there must be some out there, if they are.

I found 3 of them. 1992 Pajero's.

They are all JDM's from Japan.

I'll take a closer look tomorrow and snap some pictures. They're sitting at a dealer who has no idea what diff lockers are.

If you are talking about torsen type LSD and locker in one unit this was/id available to my knowledge only in Gen 3 and 4 IRS rear.
92-94 SR (available in US) had optional locker which incorporated elements of friction plate type LSD [Linked Image]but as far as I'm concerned according to what I heard LSD function was pretty much worthless that why later Mitsu switched to locker only unit on big axle Montero. I'm not 100% sure about locker available in early MSport. It could have been that same LSD like locker.

I was un-aware of a Torsen/ locker. I thought the newer trucks had open diffs and relied on the stability control to lock down a spinning wheel.
The Hybrid is the one I saw in the service manuals.
I do notice the clutch plate stacking showing mostly outer disks, I have restacked diffs to make them lockup more aggressively.
I look forward to more info.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a German language Gen 2 Mitsu workshop manual, complete with supplements so that it covers the Gen 2 from 1992 to 2002 (yip, the Gen 2 was sold alongside the Gen 3 in certain European markets until recently; it was called the Pajero Classic ).

Anyway, the interesting thing is that the 1996 supplement makes mention of the fact the the 3.5 V6 and 2.8 diesel versions of the Pajero were equipped with a rear hybrid LSD.

The hybrid LSD is described in the manual as being a worm thread (i.e. Torsen) LSD with a viscous coupling added to it. The viscous coupling improves the operation of the LSD when one wheel is lifted or has very little traction. Note that the hybrid LSD is not a lockable diff.

My South African spec Gen 3 (with 3.2 DiD motor ) has a lockable rear Torsen LSD. This is not a hybrid LSD, because it does not have the viscous coupler, but it doesn't need it, because it can be locked when needed . This diff was available on the Gen 3 since launch in 2000. Until the advent of electronic traction control in 2003, Gen 3s were available in some markets (Australia was one) without the locking rear diff, but with a hybrid Torsen LSD with viscous coupler similar to the one described above.

I must say that I am very impressed with the effectivity of my Torsen LSD (compared to plate-type LSDs), but it obviously does not compare to how effective it is once fully locked. My Torsen LSD responds very well to use of the handbrake to make it "bite".

Hope that helps
