Getting the Wheeling Fever
On my 94 4x4 tracker, I had to drop the front differential to remove the oil pan when I was replacing the gasket. Once the differential was out of the way, I had to drop the oil pan down, remove the pickup tube and then I could get the pan the rest of the way out.

DesertTracker is right! Removing the front diff. is the easiest way to remove the oil pan. But I also recall needing to drop the steering linkage (tie-rods and pitman- arm) down off the frame and loosening both left and right side motor mount nuts to allow the engine to be lifted slightly to fully remove the oil pan.

Its all coming back to me now...I did have to loosen the motor mounts and lift the engine a couple of inches. I don't remember messing with the steering linkage. Maybe that would have made it easier had I done so, though.
