My turn signals would not stay working at idle but once I increased the idle speed, the signals will stay working. Is this normal or does this mean the alternator is not working up to capacity?

it's the alternator. Mine did this too. They had been acting up for about a year getting worse and worse. I bought a new electronic flasher which helped but then one day the alternator just completely gave out. Got a new one and everything's back to normal!

A relay would be cheaper to swap out, but it doesn't sound like the relay to me. In my experience, relays tend to just fail.
I'd have to agree that it sounds more like the alternator. What you can do is take it out and take it to someplace like Advance Auto and have them bench test it. Places like that will bench-test alternators for free in just a few minutes.

Mine did the exact same thing - bad alternator. I rebuilt it and it's been fine since. The wipers would go really slow too - you may want to look at those as well.

yes, the wipers are slow, in fact, the fast speed isn't working. I have several alternators to get checked. Is there a difference in amps between a raider alternator or a conquest alternator? I am glad I have not put the AC compressor on yet.

Well, my alternator works fine, and my blinkers have been doing this for I know of at least 6.5 years since I have had it! My dad gave it to me back in Nov.2000 I have put about 20k on it in 6.5 years and the blinkers kinda blink slow and sometimes will get stuck but not every time...Well, I need to fix it, but its one of those thinks that you never think of until it does it again! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

I'm not sure if there is a difference in the two alternators or not. Mine would also crank a little slow sometimes. The voltage regulator died a slow death, so it was intermittant for a while. You may even try hooking it up to a battery charger and see if your signals speed up. Also, if you've got a meter, measure the voltage at the battery while @ idle. Should be in the 13-14V range (has to be over 12.6 v).

The Conquest alt. is a higher output unit. Use one of those.
