Getting the Wheeling Fever
So im only getting like 9 MPG on my yota. Anybody have any ideas why. i just changed the plugs and wires. I think its my gearing to be honest. I have stock gears in with 33x12.5x15 BFG. I wonder if this kit off ebay would fit everything. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4cyl...itemZ160098193916QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Also how hard is it to change the gears out. Im not the best with the tools but not the worst either. If i cant do it how much should it cost to pay somebody to do it, with or without the parts. Thanks guys all help would be grateful. WOODY

You should definitely be getting better mileage than that, I have 33's and just went from stock 4.10 gearing to 4.88 gearing because I"m gonna be putting 35's on it next tire set. Anyway, I was getting 15-17mpg in the city. Mine's an '84.

As for the gears, ask what kind of gears they are. I got yukon gears, the best as far as I know. Don't go cheap on this. Find out if you have an 8" diff, I would imagine that you do, but just make sure.

The install is probably one of the more complicated things I've ever done, I had to order two specialized tools which I got off ebay for $125, an inch pound torque wrench and a dial caliper. Believe me, it's no simple process, but it can be done with lots of patience and a full toolset.

Not your exact diff setup, but it'll give you a great idea of what's involved.

Very very helpful

No idea how much it is for a shop to do it.

so with my set up should i go with 4.88 or 5.29. The yukon gears you speak of are the chevy yukon gears or is YUKON the name brand.

What can i do about my gas milage???????

thanks WOODY

Better not buy the Ebay kit. Looking like Genuine brand gearset with the ring gear bolts included. I am going to guess you have 4.56 gears. 4.88 will help. That's what came with you truck IF it was stock with 31 x 1050 tires. (gear code G144, V6, Auto) 5.29 will probably be better for you. You can purchase used 4.88 diffs from car-part.com for a more reasonable price though, then just plug-n-play the entire diff. Your call. Also, check codes to see if your O2 sensor is defective. This will also cause bad fuel mileage.
