Getting the Wheeling Fever
I blew my 4.88 (sheared 5 pinion teeth) third this past weekend and had to limp it about 15 miles at 20mph. I would like to take my detroit apart and clean the metal out if there is any. If someone has some pics, links, or tips it would really help.

There is really not much to it. Pull the 2 axle shafts out a bit, disconnect the driveshaft from the yoke on the rear end and take out the whole unit. Leave everything together on the ring and pinion side so you don't have to adjust anything. Maybe use a magnet to tickle out the big chunks and flush the rest.

Zuk took one apart but offhand I couldn't see which link it was. Look around you'll find it.

I know how to pull a third and get the locker out, what I want to do is take the actual locker apart.

Thanks for the response. I've spent hours on that site and I knew I had seen a writeup but couldn't find it.

I did get the link to Zuk's writeup from a guy on the pirate board but there wasn't any torque specs when he put it back together. I'll probably email him and just ask.

Thanks that's the link I got from the guy on pirate, between that one and the other autopsy one I should be fine.

I'll be glad when my gears get here because I'm riding around on a stock geared third that's welded with 36s and I hate it.
