91, 22re, 4wd, 5 speed, going after the clutch. Do I need to remove the crossmember to get to those flange bolts right above it, nearly no room to work there. I'm using a Chiltons manual and it sucks. I was hoping to find a complete write-up somewhere on the internet. Do I really have to raise the vehicle off the floor to drop the tranny. I'm just in the early stages here trying to finish loosening everything up. Do I also have to unbolt the exhaust from the manifold?

Do I really have to raise the vehicle off the floor to drop the tranny. How do you propose to get under the vehicle to access and remove the tranny w/o raising it up off the floor. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Already been under the vehicle. Rear drive shaft is off, hoping to get the front off in a bit. Then I'm going to go get a tranny jack and start surmising how to finish dropping it. I guess my next question is how far off the floor does it have to be then?

I think the posters question is will the tranny come out from under the truck at stock ride height or does the vehicle need to be raised more. My answer is that I don't think you'll have to raise it up. My truck has a 3" lift, but my tranny came out from under with no problems and it was sitting on top of a tranny jack that was about 6 to 8 inches high.

my frame to ground measurement is about 22"
With the Harbor Freight tranny jack (the $80 version) and tranny ontop, it sneaks by. Bell housing attached.
Might measure it just to see.
you'll be able to jack one side after it's dropped to get it out if you need to.

I took my exhaust off, gave me more room to work. At the top of this page ther is a link to the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for a 93, same difference.

You don't need to remove the xmember to get the drive shaft bolts off though. It's just tight.
I leave the xmember attached to the tranny when I remove the trans. Just remove the 4 nuts at the frame attachment point. It acts as a handle to grab onto the tranny when you go to reinstall it.

I removed the crossmember to get to the flange bolts because the bolts were just to tight. Tomorrow I get the tranny back from an $800 rebuild which apparently is a fairly good deal. Should I NOT be using Checker clutch rebuild parts for the truck or will they work out alright?
