Spring is here and i'm ready to rebuild a 22R for my 83 project. Those who have "been there, done that", what's a fair cost estimate for the machine work (big-valve head) and engnbldr kit?

Just had it done!
Brought the crank in to be mic'd, and it was real marginal, so we ground it down to 1st oversize. With the bearings, it was $135 here in San Diego.
The head was cleaned, pressure-tested, resurfaced, valves/seats reground, guides replaced, and a sparkplug helicoil installed: $284, but man it looks GOOD!
The block looks ok, so I'm just replacing the freezplugs and cleaning it up as best I can. $10
Gasket set was $25 off fleabay. Had a spare crank pilot bearing to put in myself: $10.
Now I just need time to put it all together.

Heres what I paid for machine work on my 22r:

Vat & MF block.................$60.00
Bore & Hone block..............$60.00
Pin bushings & hone to fit.....$40.00
Polish crank...................$25.00
Check Rods.....................$16.00
Balance........................$125.00
Deck block.....................$60.00

Total..........................$386.00

Add in the rebuild kit, cover, headbolts, cam, RV head, from EB...approx $900.00. Plus all the little extras that add up: bolts, RTV, hoses, carb rebuild, tools, fluids, ect, ect...

I've got a drawer full of receipts that Im scared to add up lol. Some can do it cheaper I'm sure, really just depends on how thorough you wanna be...

Good info... What's involved with the balancing? rods/pistons within a gram of each other?
I'm sure the misc will eat my lunch by the time it's done. I have a hoist, but still need an eng stand...

Just an FYI, Autozone has a good stand for about $40 last I looked.
I haven't the slightest idea what my rebuild cost. It was done a couple years ago and I have conviently forgot the numbers

yea thats all the balancing was...I read that it wasnt really necessary as the 22r's are supposed to be pretty good from the factory but my machinists had to take quite a lot of material from the rods to get them within spec. The Rock pistons from EB were nearly perfect outta the box.

I hear you about that "misc" category!! I got me a cheapo stand from harbor freight and used their 20% off coupon...it works fine and held my 390 ford but dont even think about trying to spin a V8 on that thing with out getting injured lol I know from experience!

Getting the Wheeling Fever
mine cost me aboat 15oo hundred all together. had to replace a lot of hardware and i would recommend you buying two sets of gasket. the sleeve repairs for the rear and front bearings on the crank. rear main bearing seal and housing gasket. red treadlocker, and lots of pictures will
save a lot of grief at the end with extra bolts you find.

I've done one motor w/o balancing and one with balancing.
When balacing, I provided the entire rotating assembly - front pulley, flywheel, and some shops even want the clutch.

You can do it either way, but the motor I had balanced is significantly smoother at idle... Whatever that's worth.
