Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Hi all, I have a 1980 toyota 4x4 that I have been wavering as to whether or not I will be fixing it up and I think I have decided that I will fix it. I started a week or so ago and have stalled a little bit (it's me not the truck)
I am replacing the engine and when I pulled the 20R it just slid out nice and easy like but now the new engine (a 1983 22R) will not mate up just right, I think I have the splines lined up but I'm not certain, it is sitting about 3/4" out from the bell housing and doesn't seem to want to go any further, I haven't resorted to tightening the bolts to draw the engine in yet (I didn't want to resort to violence). Should I put it in gear and turn the engine with a breaker to get the shaft to lign up without moving? Any help would be great.
thanks

It sounds like you have a manual transmission. Did you check to make sure the clutch disk is centered in the pressure plate when you were bolting it onto the flywheel? If it's not the input shaft of the transmission will not properly line up with the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft. It will hit the outer edge of the bearing instead of going into the hole in the center. That will stop you about 1/2" - 3/4" short of your goal. -- Matt

That sounds right I guess, I used the alignment tool but I can't be certain that it was perfect, it felt a little sloppy sitting in the bearing, perhaps I'll have to give it another go.

It is good to resist the urge to use the bolts to draw the engine up to the tranny. This is a great way to damage expansive parts.
x2 on possible alignment issue. You may need to rotate the crank as you mentioned, or even jack the tranny to get a better angle. Be patient, it will happen.

You might also want to check your pins for lining up the motor & tranny. I had one before that on the drivers side where the pin goes in and the hole wasn't even there! ofcourse by the time i found the problem i was mad and reached in there with the sawzall and cut the pin off
