Limited slip install.... #800871 03/28/07 02:44 AM

My poor YJ was built without a limited slip and I HATE the fact. For a Jeep, it's pitiful in the mud and snow. My '88 Ranger is locked in the rear (previous-owner install) and it's absolutely incredible in the slippery stuff.

So...I was thinking about just a limited slip. First, any brand suggestions, and second, is this an install I am capable of? No, I cannot and have never rebuilt a rearend and don't know how.

Few of us know how or have the tools to build a rear end..
That said you CAN install a lunchbox locker in there..
I use POWERTRAX LOCKERS A couple of hours with two common tools and there ya are. Google for prices and delivery. Should be less than 300 bucks and works wonderfully.

Need a Spot
I've been wondering about this too, will the stock rear end hold up with one? I'm running 32s.

Body Damage is Cool
93yj, IMHO a limited slip differential is simply junk for offroad applications. I strongly recommend a full automatic (as in always on) type locker for the rear axle.
I personally ran several years with a Detroit Locker in the Dana 35 with 33 and 35 inch tires over some of the most difficult trails in Colorado, Utah and California before replacing the dana 35 with a 1 ton rated axle; the driverside axle tube started turning where it goes into the differential, only the traction bar held the axle tube in place. I was fortunate to have been able to get the rig off the trail and back home, a distance of about 150 miles!

94 YJ, SOA, 2-1/2 Alcans, ARB-front, Detroit-Rear, 4.56:1 gears, Oasis Trailhead compressor, 4:1 Terra Lo, 37x12.50x15 SSR's, 8000 lb Ramsey, & etc.
