Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey guys,,,newbie here. Ive logged on to this site over the years quite often,,everyone here gives great info. Problem....I have an 85 2.6 SWB Monty. Its always had Vapor locking issues. Its been in the family since new. Some years back it had an electric fuel pump installed next to the tank..it has since gone out over this last winter. I need a new one due to the summer months coming. What size pump do I need? Please help.

A small Carter pump with about 4psi capacity should do fine. I think Phil has written up something about electric pump installation. You could check past records using the search function and by going through the Drivetrain Bible section. Welcome to the Wire!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Pep Boys sells a pump that'll work. I think it's 4-7 PSI. I put one on mine a few years ago and have never vapor-locked since, even up above 12,000 feet.

Where have you found yourself vapor-locking? I hope you mean up in the mountains because you shouldn't be vapor-locking around Denver. If you are, it might be some other problem.

For the most part its in the mountains, only on 85 degree + days and at long distance I have a little trouble.

I carry a jug of water just for killing vapor lock in anything with a carb, and with my luck lately, I'm gonna carry it for f.i., too. I've managed to vapor lock a tbi chevy already (of course, the fuel was boiling in the tank..)

Yup. Just pour it slowly and directly on the mechanical fuel pump to cool it down. Once it's cooled down it should be able to pump fuel and fire up.
