so i'm putting a new engine in a 91 4runner and when i pulled the oil pan it had the grey gasket goop. the new engine came with two new rubber gaskets for the assembly. which would you recommend the rubber (safety first) or the tube of gasket goop???

I used the Toyota black FIPG on my '85 oil pan. No leaks in 8 years.

I believe the gaskets are typically included in the kits for earlier 22R engines which did use gaskets.

thanks. i was leaning that way anyhow (if done right it seems like it would make a better seal) and wanted to make sure i was not missing something with the rubber gaskets.

Just make sure you go around the INSIDE lip where the bolts go thru, and don't overdo it with the goose goobers; they migrate. The Permatex black is good too.

Ya, use rtv. I missed that detail when I rebuilt my motor and just used the cork gasket that came in the gasket kit Dunno what I was thinking but 1yr later and I have a massive oil leak and I'm 85% sure its coming from there. Gotta drop the pan and replace it with rtv..

The best stuff is the blag FIPG from Toyota, a bit pricey 15-20 dollars a tube but worth it.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just recently had my 3VZE out of my '89 Runner for a dropped valve seat. I decided to pull the bottom end also to freshen up all the gaskets and look things over.

The motor had been out at sometime in it's life and some snapperhead had the pan off. They must have used 4 tubes of RTV on the pan when they put it back on.

Be careful how much sealant you put on, as too much is a bad thing. In my motor it had migrated throughout the oil pan. There was a full handfull of the stuff in the bottom of the pan. The oil pickup screen was 1/2 blocked by RTV that had gotten on the screen when it was liquid. The oil pump had evidence in it that it had passed some RTV through it also.

A little dab will do ya!! The FSM recommends a bead size for your motor, stick to that recommendation.

Excellent point Outlaw,
A piece of that gets in a galley, and OK, yeah, your pan isn't leaking, but you're about to possibly spin a bearing and ruin/replace a crank. Permatex #2 for me.

Now,

What I'm wondering is, did all that RTV have anything to do with the valve seat falling out of the head?

Most likely not, but, since I do not have anyone else to blame I think that idiot with the mega-tube of RTV is the cause of my head rebuild, bottom end dissasembly, hot tanked block, honed cylinders, etc, etc.

Wish I could find that guy to give him a piece of my mind, him and is damn tube of RTV.....

I used the grey permatex and as my shop manual stated I applied about a 1/8 to 1/4 bead around the oil pan.
make sure to not put too much by the dip stick.
