Need a Spot
I'm looking around for receiver hitches for my 1984 4runner and keep running up against, "It's not available sir, sorry". And I see what they're doing... they're going by the same little "drop-down menu" to search on year/make of vehicle which for 4runners...only goes back to 1987. I suppose I could just order the CURT I'm looking at in JC Whitney for ~$130, and send it back if it doesn't work...but what a pain with shipping costs and all. Why don't they include the '84s - '86s? Do they mount differently?

I had a similar problem years ago trying to get one for my 68 Chevy pickup. I had a local shop make one for about the same price a most of the newer model hitches and it was very nicely done. You might consider checking out a local welding shop or hitch installer to see what they can offer. Ask at an RV dealer to see who they refer to for hitch installations.

I just tried reese-hitches.com When I plugged in 86 4runner nothing came up 86 pu did. Not sure pu hitch fits 4runner. But like the other reply check a local welding shop. You might be suprised. It might be cheaper or the same. I built my own for my 87 xcab and saved a pile. Mind you I had technical resources.

Just realized I made an error on my reply. I said 86 I meant 84.

As far as I know, all the 1st gen 4Runners ('84-'89) have the same basic rear frame rails and mounting holes, at least the ones I use on my rear bumper brackets:

Wow that looks like a complicated hitch. Anybody know if the frame at the back end of the 1st gen 4 runners is the same as the 87 xcab pu. Or if different advise what difference is.

not a complicated one.

roger that made those outer thingees to mount to the frame.

all commercial class i/ii hitches i've seen, including the ones i had, only had in the inner frame attachment points.

most 4x4 places that sell bumpers include the outer "wings" mounting point.

since we all know how much they take abuse... lol...
