It was rusty, I pulled, the sheet metal tore. Any clever fixes? I am really surprised not to find anything using search.

CJM here owns www.toyotafiberglass.com . He just designed a gas filler pocket not too long ago; check it out. Sounds like you might need to do a bit of S/M work; Corey's very helpful, esp if you can send him pics of what you've got to work with.
