Drive shaft seal replacement?? Help #803932 04/09/07 04:25 PM

In the past month I had noticed a click noise when I let off the gas that sounded like the drive shaft. Upon inspection I found that the slip joint in the rear drive shaft might need lube. Then found why it was all out...A rock must have hit the zert for the slip joint as the lil ball that keeps the grease in was stuck in so all the grease would just flow back out. (looking at how exposed the zert is on the rear shaft, surprised I have never broke it all the way off) Anyhow, I swapped the zert and proceeded to refill with lube. As the slip got full...I noticed grease/air/water leaking out of the seal area right at the slip in the shaft Just wondered if this joint in the drive shaft has a replaceable seal (thinking maybe an O-ring) that I could replace. Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated. smile

Body Damage is Cool
More than likely it's just blowing passsed the seal because it's full, just like on a u-joint.

You overfilled it. You only need a few pumps of grease in there, unlike a ujoint where you pump it until it comes out. As the shaft compresses, so does the grease so it has to go somewhere.

FYI, it's a grease "zerk" not "zert"

After replacing the zerk

I decided it had just gotten some water up in there after all the old grease had drained out....so when I filled it back up the water/grease mix came out a lot more easily. Now that most of the water is out, it's all good. That zerk in that location is so exposed, I'm surprised it isn't damaged or broken off more often.

That zerk is also easily sheared off by the gas tank skidplate if you flex the left rear tire upward, especially if your gas tank skidplate is a bit out of shape from "use" off-road. That has happened to me lots of times.
