Need a Spot
I have pulled many axles when I was a mechanic years ago, but I haven't pulled a dana 44. I have a 2004 Rubicon and would like to know what tools I need and the steps involved. Headed down to Moab soon and would like to have the tools needed. Can any one list these for me so I don't have to actually pull the axle and make a list? Also any tips for disassembly and reassembly.

Thanks

You don't need a list. Just go outside and see what the size of the bolts is! The axle comes out from the outside of the wheel.

There is a strange star looking nut that looks like I will need a special tool for. Other than that are there any other special tools needed?

If it's a bolt, you will need a torx bit, but any Jeep owner should have a set of those already. If it is the actual nut then you will need a reverse torx bit, which your local auto parts store should have. Other than that you should just need a decent set of tools. Don't forget a cheater bar, but if you have a hi lift the handle works great for that.

Those three bolts that hold the unit bearing in are NOT torx, they are 13mm 12 point.

my mistake. torx and 12 points are both star shaped.
