Need a Spot
Hello, new to the forum. I just recnetly turned 16, got my license, and recived a 96' 2WD 2Door Cherokee. I'm trying to avoid getting a 4x4 truck due to my urge to mud and lack of money, I would like to be able to go places and run through some mud without getting too stuck . I'm not sure what the capablities are in my jeep. I've been hearing lockers, Flowmaster, and a K&N would help alot. Any ideas, comments, sugestions please let me know. Cost is the bigest factor. Thanks alot, Marshall.

Body Damage is Cool
The flowmaster and K&N will be of no help to you for your purpose. A locker in the rear axle would provide the most benefit. If this is to be a daily driver, I'm make it a selectable locker, rather than an automatic locker. But that will cost you -- maybe between $600 and $800 for parts, and another $250 for labor.

But even with a rear locker, you're going to be disappointed in the mud or any serious off-roading. I'd advise you to trade in your 2WD on a 4WD model.

Not what I wanted to hear <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. I'm glad I got your opinion before I did that. I'm in highschool so money is prety scarce. Do you have any idea what the difference would be if I traded my jeep for something 4x4?

For about 300 bucks you and your dad can install a LOCKRITE locker in the rearend. It only takes 2 wrenches to install.
Put some BFG mud grips (not all terrains) on there. The with 3 of your largest girlfriends in the back you will be surprised where that thing will go.

Haha! What exactly is that? The mudding I'm going to be is very lite, and I'm just goin to play on little rocks. A friend is giving me a winch 8k lbs for 100 or less also. But that sounds like exactly what I need. Can you explain it or have a link? Thanks, Marshall

Will do, thanks. My jeep dosen't have a tacometer at the moment, how hard and expensive would it be to put on in?
Also, any chance you know where I can find what rear gears I have?

You can find out yourself... Jack up one rear wheel and put her in neutal. Mark both the driveshaft and the jacked up tire with chalk or something you can see. have someone slowly turn the tire ONE TURN zackly... while you count the turns and partial turns of the driveshaft.
the shaft will turn 3.07 all the way to a possible 4.11.. the result will be your gear ratio..
Come back here and tell us, ok?
