Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'll preface by saying yes, I Did search, found no definitive answers. I just picked up a set of 33x12.5 procomp at's on 15x10 rock crawlers. the wheels have only 3.5-3.75" BS, so they stick out way too far. These will end up on a 99 Trooper with the big ugly plastic flares.

I know 15x8 is my best option, so that is what I am looking for. What is the minimum backspacing that I will need so as to not need to take the sawzall to the rear of the front wheelwell? Would 4" be enough?

I am not looking for something that will tuck way up, as my offroad travels are limited to beach driving on very soft sand. I need floatation, not articulation. A little cutting is okay, but nothing too noticible.

Thanks for the help.

Ted

Do you have any lift? A simple 1.25" OME lift should make it no issue to fit 33" tires regardless of backspacing, and IMHO the ride is better with the OME coils anyway.

You won't be able to fit them without some type of lift. Even with 3 inches of lift, plan on trimming up the rear of the front fenderwell. It's not the diameter so much that causes the problems, it is the width. My wheels have 3.75 inches backspacing and I still have minor rubbing issues. I think you would have even more issues on a wheel with more backspacing.

Thanks for thye fast replies.
I mounted up two of the tires on the 15x10's front and rear. In the rear, If I hit a big bump, flexed at all, I would relly chew up the fender. The tire sticks out ~3in. past the fender.
In the front, I hit in the front fender, but since it's only plastic, a little trimming and i'm in the clear. The rear of the front fender is the problem. because of how far the tire sticks out, it is really hitting bad. I tried to pull the fender out to see what was under, found black plastic trim, and metal. If i cut this, i lose my mounting point for the bottom of the trimmed fender.
I am just hoping that narrower wheels with more backspace will help get the tires in closer to the body, reduce the amount i have to cut.
Remember, this truck floats, not flexes.

Thanks, Ted

Hmmm, well, on my 93 I have 35x12.5 tires on 15x8 wheels with 3.75" backspacing. I have 3.25" suspension lift. This setup barely rubs on the back of the front wheel wells, and once in a while on the edge of the plastic bumper at the wheel well.

So, I would think 33" tires would fit just fine...but apparently YMMV.
