My rodeo has 4.88's with 35's. I love my truck but I can't bare driving it for more than a couple days. I don't want a hot rod but it would be nice to get up to speed in under an hour. I have to keep it up at 5 krpm so when it shifts it doesn't drop below 3k or then its all over. It isn't happy till its at least 3krpm.

I don't know what to do regear? maybe a manual tranny would not suck all the little power it has? or do I need to bite the bullet and drop in a v8

My big truck has 512lb ft more torque than the rodeo. isn't that sad

Not really, assuming it's the Duramax in your sig. Torque is the diesel's strong point.

New gears would be a whole lot cheaper and easier than an engine swap. Personally, I would go with 5.38's. That should get you back a lot of power.

Either that or put on some 33's <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />

Getting the Wheeling Fever
So I've bee thinking about that latelyà you know re-gearing and all thatà Well after I did my eng. swap on my 92 Amigo, I was expecting to be a lot faster (with that 3.2 L) I know I might end up putting a SC on some dayà But if I can re-gear my truckà what is the down side of that? And how much faster could it get? How expensive is it? I have a 92 Amigo with the original differentials, 32Æs and a 01 Rodeo 5spd tyranny. Can you re-gear a manual tyranny?

Thanks for you guyÆs time to read and reply to all my stupid questionsà

your setup now with 32s should not be all that bad. that is what I am running and it does just fine.

As far as regearign goes, you can regear a manual becuase it only changes the diferential. With the manual you are better off as well cause you actually have 4.30 gears in it. Unlike the auto trannies which can stock with 4.10 gears.

On a first-gen Amigo, there is a good chance he actually has 4.56's. I will agree that you should be doing pretty well with the 3.2 swapped in, though. I am running 32's and stock (4.56) gearing on my '93 Amigo with the 2.6. Its slow; but not dangerously or unbearably slow. It'll run 75mph alright, just takes more time to get there than my V8 truck.

To the original thread starter, I'd try the regear route before doing the engine swap... for ease, simplicity, time, and cost concerns if nothing else.

I'd say regear...cheaper, easier to do etc.. and if your looking for a shop to do it I'd recommend S&S Off-Road on Miller Valley Rd right behind Chuy's, Shane's a good guy <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

you are not supposed to re-gear a tyranny, you must destroy it <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

Its was said above; but just to be clear it is the differentials (axles) that people are refering to when they say 'regear', not the transmission. Also, the front and rear axle gear ratios need to match (or be within 2% of one another at most); so if you regear you must do both ends of the truck.
