Getting the Wheeling Fever
G'day Jeepers.

Quick question. I have been using the AmPro pitman puller in an attempt to remove the current pitman. I have only moved the pitman arm about 1/4 of the way off, and I have broke 2 pullers.

Any suggestions on a different brand or type of puller? I think this is the first time this arm has had removal attempted since it went on in 82!

Thanks in advance.

i've always been told to do a soaking shot of liquid wrench (overnight) then pulling/wrenching and tapping with a hammer at the same time.

Howdy LM. When I have a tight fit I tighten the puller to what I think is it's limit and then give it a WHACK with a bfh. This usually loosens the part to where I can again tighten the puller and give her nother WHACK! The sudden impac is a wonderful thing to see.

Thanks Guys.. still working on her. I gave her one round of a good soaking and let her sit about 2 hours. Now I'm tightening the puller to what appears to be its limit (slight flexing showing on the ends) and giving her a good whack with a BFH! The I am loosening the puller and slightly rotating it to grab at another point and following suite with another whack! So far.. still workin' it. No beer till its off. Heading back to work on it!

HA! Scratch that last post. I went back out there, hosed her down with some PB Penatrating Catalyst, maxed out the puller, got my biggest hammer out and gave one huge WHACK and the son'***** flew off!

Thanks for the input fellas.

AmPro tools are JUNK JUNK JUNK...it's a good thing they come with a lifetime warranty. Good example of "you pay for what you get".

I used to laugh when a customer would come in with a broken AmPro ratchet all pissed off. I'd think to myself, come on guy, you payed 10$ for that thing. What do you EXPECT?!!!

Then again, 28$ was a lot a money for a rotor (for example) to the rednecks. They'd say. "28 dollars!!!???". Heh. Unbelievable.

What about heating it with a propane torch?? I've heard that works really well. Of course you have to be careful not to pop the seal.

I pulled out my little torch and could not locate my nozzle to attach and fire it up. Not wanting to make another trip out I went the old way of doing things. As bhartwell59, BigJim, and BobRowe all agree... soak it with a catalyst of some sort to break up rust and the sort, put some pressure on it (in this case a pitman puller) and giver her some persuasion with a good WHACK and she'll move.

That's worked for me on several things. Would like an oxy torch though. If you're pulling the pitman, unless it's to put a longer one on, chances are you're not too worried 'bout the seal.
