I drive a few blocks and the auto trans goes into neutral and won't shift. I turn it off, leave it off fer a couple of minutes, and again I can drive a few more blocks and it goes into neutral again. I also hear like a slight grinding noise coming from the trans. It will shift OK when it runs. Any ideas?

Do you mean the shifter is physically slipping out of drive & into neutral? Or are you manually shifting into neutral & it won't shift back into drive?

My first thought would be to check/adjust the shift rod adjustment near the firewall.
