While the likelihood of cap/rotor failure may be low based on the mileage, I would still inspect them. Sometimes you can actually see traces in the plastic from misfiring - be sure to tilt them around in the light, paying close attention to possible paths between the cap pins. You never know...

Good luck - and let us know what you find.

I also had a similar problem on a different car, It would run fine for a while then just run really crappy, no power or "get up and go". The issue was trace to bad ERG valve.

Something else to look at, If temperature changes occur or damp weather, look to the distributor cap, it may have a hair line crack.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions. I have not been able to work on it this week but have compiled all your responses and will get at it this weekend.

I sure hope you guys are right and it turns out to be something easy like the dist. cap or plug wires; I'm due for a little luck here since I'm getting tired of driving my daughter's '87 Honda to work; it's just plain embarassing!

I've been out of town again the past couple of weeks but did do the compression test last night. The number 2 and 3 cylinders are less than 10 psi (1 and 4 were at 135 to 150)so I must have a valve or ring issue. I'll be pulling the head this weekend unless anyone has any other tests or areas to look at that are less invasive but I think this pretty much narrows the problem down.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Randy

Nope, your head gasket and probably the head are gone. That's why 2 AND 3 are down. They're leaking into each other. I think just about every one of us that has had the 2.6 has had this issue. More than likely the head is either cracked or warped right there. Generally the bottom ends are pretty stout so there's not much reason to get down in there. At over 150,000 miles mine still had the factory crosshatching in the bores.
