First of all I just bought this runner itÆs an 88Æ w 185K 22re 5spd. When I bought it, it had the water rushing sound inside the cab and so I looked on the forum and saw someone else was having the same sound. I followed the instructions by parking at an upward angle and taking the radiator cap off and letting it idle to working temp. Well I did that once until it started bubbling and making noises and I had thought I fixed it. It didnÆt so I tried it another time this time I watched it bubble and then the level of fluid went down so I filled it (donÆt think I was supposed to do this). Currently I still have the water rushing sound in my cab and my overflow canister is full to the top (before I filled the radiator it was at the full line) and now my temp gauge reads almost to the second white line then it goes down to around normal operating temp and the heater in the truck gets warm. Then after a few minutes the heater cools down a little and then the water temp will start to rise again.
Right before the water temp goes down I hear a water rushing sound inside the cab. Should I empty out my overflow can back down to the full line and try parking at an angle and doing the whole bit over again?

Sounds like it could be a blown head gasket. Pressure test the cooling system (look for a pressure rise as the engine revs) or chemical test the coolant with a kit to look for exhaust gas contamintation.

Depends, if it is a high pressure leak from the cylinder into the cooling system, then usually no fluid loss unless the system is overpressurized to the point the rad. cap blows and overflows the recovery bottle. I've had that happen a number of times on various vehicles and never had coolant loss (in the beginning) or coolant/oil mixing or any external leaks.

Pressure test will give you the answer or a ~$20 chemical test kit will do that as well.

4crawler's exactly right. Insidious [email]mother@#!*%![/email] that one is <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />. No leaks/oil-coolant exchange either in my case. A good shop found it by pressurizing a cylinder (#1 here) and watching the bubbles come out of the choke heater hose. BTW, the engine just ran like crap!

My engine runs great. Starts up fine idles good. Sometimes when I'm driving and push in the clutch to come to a stop the idle is noticably higher then normal, but with a tap of the throttle goes right back down. Anyways I went out and dumped out some my fluid that was in my overflow can so thats good. I took it for a test drive and the temp is not going up like it used to it is very steady right around normal operating temp. I think it was the air in my heater lines and the overflow can being full. what do you think.

yes, air in the coolant system can also cause those symptoms.

If that fixes it then that was your problem. If not, then look into a pressure or chemical test on the coolant. Mine was always intermittent in the beginning, sometimes would hear the whoosing sound, lower heater output or erratic temp readings (all related to air/exhaust gas in the coolant - bubbles make the whooshing sound and the air bubbles reduce the heat transfer capability resulting in low heater output and erratic temp gauge readings). But then the problem would pop up more frequently until it basically did it all the time.

Sounds a LOT like my 3.0L before the HG went. The motor ran fine...but, every few months I'd notice the coolant was low. Didn't see any leaks and couldn't figure out where the stuff was going.....and never paid much attention to the problem.

Then one day, I'm driving into the mountains to do a little hiking and started to hear that water rushing sound you mentioned...then noticed my temp gauge kinda of being all over the place. I pulled over and found out the coolant was low (Don't ask how I checked it). So I filled that up and drove off. About a week later my head gasket officially blew.....in a VERY large and thick cloud of white smoke.....I filled a fair size parking lot with smoke.....Impressive for such a small motor.

i got the same thing. i had the same gurgle sound, along with the up and down temps, tried burping. still the gurgling. gurgle is directly influenced by throttle in my heater core. by that i mean whenever i step on the gas there is a surge of air or air/ fuel or exhaust being forced into the coolant flow and it's manifest in the sound i hear when the climate control is set to heat. i'm gonna drive it till it hydro-locks on me or blows white smoke. could last a while...right? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />
