Need a Spot
I have a 97 taco with 33" procomp x-terrains. im looking at regearing it and locking the rear-end. Should i go with the 4.88 or 5.29 gears? also what type of locker should i get if most of my driving is on the street?

Thanks

Get a selectable locker for the your application (mostly street), I think that ARB is one of the only companies that makes a selectable locker for Tacomas unless you swap in a TRD rear. As far as gears I havent ha dmuch experience but 33 isnt that big so my guess would be 4.88. Im sure others will chime in as well.

EDIT: I now noticed you have a 4 banger, that might call for the 5.29s, still not too sure about gears though.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello,

I just bought a 97 Taco reg cab. I put 32s on it for tires. I had the crappy 3.58 ratio for the the R and Ps. I regeared to 4.56. I now have all the power out of the 4cyl that I will ever need. 4.88 should be more than enough to restore you back jto stock and then some.

Hope this helps

Body Damage is Cool
i agree with 4.88s, buddy of mine has a 99 w/ 4cyl. any lower of a gear is unnecessary.

You didn't specify what transmission you have.

With the 2.7, 5spd & 33's -
4.56's if your truck sees mostly street time.
4.88's if your truck sees mostly offroad time.

With the 2.7, auto & 33's -
4.88's are good all around but 5.29's are better
with the auto's high overdrive. 5.29 gets you close
to the original stock ratios.

yeah, i have the 2.7 L 5 spd. When im off road with the 4.10's it feels like i'm not low enough and have too much power. The 4.56's or 4.88's will help me with that?

If you go wheeling a couple of times a year, get the 4.56's. If you wheel a lot and don't mind very high rpms while on the highway, get the 4.88's.

You will be suprised at how much better it feels on the trails. I just went from 3.58's to 4.30's and it is a world of difference on the trails and daily driving. It is much slower on the trails and doesn't feel like it is straining to get up stuff.

Quick question - Were you at Uwharrie 2 weekends ago wheeling with the Isuzus?
