Need a Spot
Hello again, ive been doing a little digging, and if i recall, but cant find, Jerry once gave us a run down of the history of the c223 and brefily mentioned that the motors started out, or at one point used in refridgerant units on transports. my research dose show a 2.2L isuzu diesel used in Thermo King units. is this the same motor? is the block the same in respect i could bolt it up to my trans etc? anyone know of these engines and how they divver from the ones in the trucks we drive (or planning on driving(i got it running)) just a thought!!! cause if they are the same, bore stroke etc, i could have saved a bunch of many buying a engine re-build kit from thermo king!!!!

In my 4JB1-T research (which may or may not apply to the C223 - but I'd guess the situations are similar) I found that the industrial engines differed substantially from the automotive versions.

If I recall, the bellhousings were different (SAE or similar for the industrial units), the turbocharger and requistite internal differences were absent, the injection pump was different, and I think the industrial version is indirect-injection vs. direct for the automotive application.

Generally, I'd guess that industrial engines probably share main castings and little else with the automotive counterparts, as they are designed for very different applications (sustained use at the same RPM and so forth).

I'd say you probably would not have been able to make use of many of the parts in the kit. Someone else may have information which contradicts this, however, as this is pure speculation on my part.

HI ADRIAN, YOU ARE RIGHT , THE INDUSTRIAL ENGS ARE A LOT DIFF THAN THE STREET VERSIONS, MOST OR ALL OF THEM CAME WITH INLINE GEAR DRIVE PUMPS, I HAVE SEEN A FEW WITH THE ROTARY VE PUMP, THE CRANKS REAR END IS DIFF AS IT HAD A DIFF FLYWHEEL SET UP FOR THE STATIONARY SET UP, ACCESSORIES THAT BOLT ON ARE PRETTY MUCH IN THE SAME SPOT ALL THE WAY AROUND , THE MOTOR MOUNTS ARE IN THE SAME SPOT, AND ON THE BACK OF THE ENG IF YOU REMOVE THE SAE STYLE BELLHOUSING AND ADD THE ISUZU ADAPTER PLATE THAT THE STARTER BOLTS TO THEN A REGULAR ISUZU PASSENGER TRANS WILL BOLT ON, BUT THEN YOU RUN INTO THE FLYWHEEL PROB, ALLSO A LOT OF THOSE ENGS WERE C 190 NOT THE C223 , THERE WAS AT ONE TIME A 2.1. LITER ALLSO BUT IT WAS WAY BACK, AND THOSE ENG WERE ONLY ABOUT 40-50 HP AND LIKE YOU MENTIONED WERE DESIGNED TO RUN AT A STEADY SPEED , A BETTER ENG FOR A FAIRLY EASY SWAP INTO A GAS PICKUP WOULD BE THE 1.8 IMARK CAR DSL IT WILL BOLT RIGHT TO THE GAS TRANS , USING THE IMARK FLYWHELL AND CLUTCH SETUP,FRT ENG MOUNT ARE VERY CLOSE, ABOUT LIKE YOURS WAS, IT IS AN OVERHEAD CAM ENG AND MAKES 50 = HP , AND IF YOU COULD EVER LOCATE ONE THERE IS A 2.4 VERSION THAT WOUDL BE FANTASTIC IN THE PICKUPS AND IT IS 80 HP WITHOUT THE TURBO... AND WOULD BE AN ALLMOST BOLT IN .. JERRY

Ah, now there is a knowledgeable source for you. Looks like my guess was not too far off.

Jerry, I have been thinking that it would be interesting to gather information on swapping those OHC diesels into pickups. There does not seem to be much out there in the way of information on this sort of project. Maybe a new post and people could toss information into it?

ACTUALLY THEY ARE NOT HARD TO INSTALL, I SAW ONE A FEW YEARS AGO, A GUY HAD DONE , HAD MANUAL STEERING AND NO AIR. IT WAS IN AN 89 SHORT BED AND BOLTED RIGHT UP TO THE 2.3 TRANS , THE ONLY SHORT COMING IS THE CLUTCH IS KINDA SMALL AND NO FLYWHEEL IS AVAILABLE THAT WOULD LET YOU USE THE TRUCK CLUTCH SET UP, , AS IT WAS FRO A 21 00 LB CAR, BUT THIS THING RAN GREAT AND HE SWORE IT GOT AN AVERAGE 36-40 MPG WITH OUT EVEN TRYING , AND THAT WAS WITH THE 4.11 GEARS ,, I THINK A NEAT SWAP WOULD BE TO GO WITH THE 4.56 GEARS AND THE 4PSD AUTOMATIC FROM THE IMPULSE , A TRUCK WITH MANUAL STEERIGN SHOULD BE A PIECE OF CAKE ,A.C. WAS AVAILABLE ON THE CAR BUT NEVER PWR STR. THE 2.4 I THINK WOULD BE A GREAT ENG IF YOU LAY YOUR HANDS ON ONE JERRY
