Getting the Wheeling Fever
I purchased my '02 Trooper new. Up until now, no problems or issues ... great rig (my 2nd Trooper). There still is nothing actually wrong with the rig, but there is a strange "clunking" noise that seems to be coming from underneath transfer case shifter; but the noise only occurs when you turn a corner ... in either direction. Anytime there is some body roll (which is just about every corner), I hear a "clunk" sound that comes from underneath the vehicle. It sounds like something metal must be moving from one side to the other and then bumps into something to create the "clunk" sound. I have looked up underneath the rig but can't see anything loose. The truck runs perfect and all functions (2WD, 4WD, Auto Tranny) all work fine. Any hints? Thanks ... Fred.

Just from the location on the 'clunk,' I'd check the transmission mount where it bolts to the crossmember -- it could be worn out and allowing contact.

While you are under there, give everything a good hard shake and wiggle to see if there is movement where there should not be...

the sound can be tricky to track down. I once had a broken rear shock absorber. I was hearing a strange "clunk" under the vehicle. It gone immediately when I replaced the shock.

HEY FRED , I THINK RANDI GOT YOU COVERED , I JUST REPLACED A TRANNY REAR MOUNT THIS MORN, IT IS HARD TO SEE WHERE IT IS SITTING AND HITTING THE CROSS MEMBER, DROP THE CENTER ROCK GAURD UNDER THE TRANS, AND TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE MOUNT , I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE ONE ON MY 2001 ALLSO, THE LOWER EDGE OF THE THE UPPER MOUNT BODY SHOULD BE AT LEAST 3/8THS INCH ABOUT THE BOTTOM OR IT WILL BUMP AND VIBRATE , IF YOU HAVE A LIFT TO WHERE YOU CAN GET UNDER IT , PUT A JACK UNDER THE TAIL END OF THE TRANS FER CASE AND JACK IT UP AS HI AS YOU CAN GET IT AND THEN TAKE A PIECE OF 5/8THS OD HEATER HOSE ABOUT 4 INCHS LONG AND FORCE IT BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER PARTS OF THE MOUNT AND THEN LEFT THE WEIGHT BACK DOWN AND I BET YOUR PROB, WILL BE GONE FOR EVER , THERE IS AN AWFUL LOT OF WEIGHT ON THAT MOUNT JERRY

This probably is not your problem, but I had a mystery clunk in the Amigo a few years ago. Every time I stopped or turned a corner kinda hard. I could have sworn my shock was loose, or something else in the front end was bad. It was so bad, it was literally driving me nuts! I was about to pull my hair out (if I had any...)

One day, I was cleaning the Amigo up, and I noticed that under the passenger seat, under the carpet, there was a small recessed area about 4 inches square, and an inch or two deep. It just so happened that a rock that we had collected on our of our trips (hey, what can I say, it was kinda pretty), had managed to fall in there.

It was just big enough to be able to roll 1/3 turn forward or side to side...

And that was the source of my front end clunk... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

Jerry:
About a month ago, my local dealership changed both tranny filters and did a fluid change for me. I never heard this clunking sound prior to that work being done. Did the dealership mechanic have to mess with the transmission mount to do this filter and fluid work? Thanks in advance ... Fred.
