Need a Spot
new to this forum, would like any help/advise on replacing the 22R engine in my 87 4WD pickup with a 22RE from a 86 4runner. seems possible to me, am i right? what do i need to watch out for. my plan is to take the engine/elctronics and fuel tank/pump from the 4runner (wrecked) and install it in the 87 truck, drill a hole in the firewall for ECU wires and mount the ECU under dash or kickpanel somewhere and maybe only need to splice one wire or so to the ignition wire bundle. is this doable or am i asking for headaches?

A couple of options;
- Full EFI conversion on the 87; this is what you have described and is a good way to go, but can get quite involved with the wiring and fuel system issues.

- Convert the 86 22RE to a 22R; this option involves using the 22RE longblock and bolting up the 22R manifold and carb. Pretty much a simple bolt in process, no wiring changes. You will need to add the mechanical fuel pump to the 22RE block, take the fuel pump and eccentric drive from the end of the cam off the old 22R.

Personally I have take the second approach until I decide if I want to do the full on EFI conversion and collect all the parts, the carb works fine for my current applications. Good luck.

There should not be any messed up links. Look under "custom EFI".

Megasquirt isn't mine - in fact, outside of the copywrite on the board and processor it doesn't belong to anyone. Think of it as a "user contributed" EFI solution.

If you're willing to do some of your own wiring, you can get it for around $300. I'm no longer offering the "drop in" kits due to time constraints on my end...
