Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Hello, My 1989 V6 Toyota 4Runner runs great passed smog and will recieve "a little lift". Now I have a gas smell comming from the front of the truck at idle or when its parked. I see no leaks and can not find where the smell comes from.I have even removed the charcoal canister and it seems ok and it didn't smell aand the two ports were not blocked .The gas cap is ok (not a toyota unit) . I'm stumped does any one have or had the same problem?

It does not take much gas for it to smell. Some possible leak locations are the fuel injectors where they attach to the fuel rail upper and manifold lower. There are O-ring seals at each of thes locations. If they are original may be worth replacing them. Seal kit is about $6 per injector. Aslo there is a rubber section of fuel hose running from the fuel pressure regulator on the return side across the engine to the hard metal return line. This rubber line may be seeping? You don't have to have a dripping or pooling leak to get the smell. It may be evaporating nearly as fast as it is leaking if it is a slow leak.
The fuel injectors can leak out the injector orfice, but I don't think you would smell it during idle.

Thank You , I will check the afore mentioned items. Also would a new TPS sensor if not properly adjusted have anything to do with this ?

I do not think that a misadjusted TPS could be causing a gas smell at idle.
