My 90' 2.6 runs like crap without MAF sensor hooked up, but will instantly die when I hook it up. Is it safe to say that it is bad, or is there something else that might be bad?

There should be some info on how to test it in a service manual. I have tested several Toyota AFM's with a manual. If it is bad I have one for sale off a '88 2.6 86k miles. $25+shipping.

Good luck

It should not run at all without the MAF hooked up. I would also not suggest plugging it in with the engine running or the key in the on position. I would worry about letting the smoke out of something.

What was your truck doing that prompted you to try and run it without the MAF plugged in?

I've been rebuilding the front end for a while now, periodically cranking it up to let the oil stir around, and the other day it wouldnt start at all. It acted as if it wasnt getting any gas so I pulled the intake hose apart and squirted some gas in it to see if it would fire off and it did, but ran real rough. As I was scratching my head wondering what was going on, I realized I hadnt put the intake hose back on and probably was running bad due to no signal from mass meter. Well as soon as I put the hose back on it died like you turned the key of. I tried to start it back up and nothing. I unpluged the mass meter and it will crank but runs weird as expected. I dont want to buy one before I know that it is bad. Any suggestions???

Go spend the $16 and buy a haynes manual. It should show you how to test it. It dependes what is wrong with the AFM as to if it will run. My Toyota's was bad and it still ran but barely. It would idle rough and as soon as I gave it the gas it would stumble and die.
