My Montero's alternator shows a charge of only 12 volts, my check EGR light and battery light come on faintly, and now my choke won't fully open when warm. My 2.6 is just falling apart. Whats wrong now??

Electrical grimlins are the worst. The Montero has a good electrical system. I would start by checking all your connections and ground wires. Also check the fusable link.

Lock parts store can check your Alt for you.

Sounds like the voltage regulator is on its way out?

I have had the alternator for 8 years. That could be the problem. But what operates the choke? Is it electric or hot water operated?

Body Damage is Cool
The alternator may be going south -should put out more than 12 volts. Mine died a slow painful death.

If you've got a volt meter, check your battery voltage with the engine and all accessories off. It should be around 12.6 volts. Once you start the engine (again, all accessories off) it should jump up to the 13-15 volt range. There is more to it than this simple check, but it's easy and a good place to start. If you don't have a volt meter, you can get a cheap one at Harbor Freight for like five bucks.
