Need a Spot
Ok im looking for a Jeep for my next car, something somewhere ind the mid '90s. Just something 4x4 so i can have some fun. I was wondering what kind of tires and how big i should go with them? and also how big of a body lift i should get. Not something to outragious but just something to get me around if i would go mudding.

Thanks, Jake

I think that before you decide on what size tires and how big of a lift, you need to decide on what type (model) of Jeep you want.

1977 CJ-7, fiberglass body, AMC 360 w/ headers, DUI ignition, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4150 carb, TF999, Dana 300, 4.56 gears lockers, York air comp, 4" susp lift, 2" body lift, BFG 35" M-T tires, Megashifter, AGR pump & box, REP8000 winch.

Ok thats such a broad question that I cant even begin to answer it.

Figure out what model you want, if it will be street legal, your budget, type of offroading, etc then we can better answer your question.

1994 Isuzu Amigo XS -Sold
1972/3 CJ5 Glass body, 5" lift 34's. 5 years of work coming to an end.

Terre Haute, Jeep Wranglers are a lot of fun but IMHO may not be a good choice for "muddin"! Yes, I'm a rock-solid Jeep fan, but let's be honest: Jeeps are light-duty off-road vehicles and are not designed for near continuous use in deep mud venues without significant modification and expense. IMHO, Jeeps come-up-short in the areas of horsepower, and tire-spinning drivetrain strength. My best recommendation would be to purchase a one-ton-rated pickup truck of the same era!

im not wanting to go hardcore mudding, just some light trails and shallow mud. i dont want to tear it up. i just have wanted a jeep for a long time. but i dont want it to just be for the road i want it to be able to go off road w/o problems.

Good! I'd recommend a TJ Wrangler (97-06) with a 6 cyl. engine. The older YJ Wranglers are not that great offroad or onroad compared to the TJ. Pretty much there is little you'll need to do to a TJ for trail use, it's been a very capable offroad and onroad Jeep right-off-the-show-room floor. Not much need for 35 inch or taller tires and stronger axles and gears, at least as long as you don't attempt crossing deep water and swamps, or traverse difficult rocky trails in the West. Some TJ's came with special purchasing packages having Dana 44 rear axles; this would be a plus if you could snag one.

I'll 2nd that...Very capable stock. You wouldn't need mods at all really for reasonable stuff (by reasonable, I mean it can get pretty puckery!). But 33's are prolly about as big as you'd want to go with the tires w/out changing out the gears $$$. Easy to lift enough to fit 33's too, and they'll go pretty much anywhere. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

97tj, Shaved Ford 9 rear, 4:10's, New 35x12.5 BFG KM2's to test!, Warn x8000i, ARB's, Quick Disco's, Hand Throttle, & it's my DD. smile

I prefer auto for offroad adventures.. A lot smoother in
the stop and go's. And of course on the street auto is great too.
