I'm looking into buying a Mitsubishi Pajero from Japan and I need to know which, if any, engines are compatible. I hear that the Montero and the Pajero are interchangable. Do the diesel and gas engines use the same auto tranny? Are the 3.0 and the 3.5 Mitsu engines the same engines as in some of chryslers lineup- Chrysler Intrepid, Dodge Caravan...
Can anyone confirm this? I need options if the 2.5 turbo diesel pops and can't get a replacement. Thanks!

2.5 TD's don't pop You would still be able to get a replacement engine thru the many "low miles" engine importers so I think your covered.
You might get more info over on the Canadian board....I mean the diesel board

Thanks to the internet you can get any part u need. The mitsubishi 3.5 SOHC or DOHC are not the same as the new chrysler 3.5 V6. I'd also would recommend that you talk to the Canadian importers of JDM vehicles, eh? Or you'd spend thousands on something you can't title in the USA, you betcha.

The truck is titled and certified. Yes it's legal in Canada thanks to our 15 year and older exemption to imports.
Maybe I'm asking too many questions so I'll ask just one: Do the gasoline engines from the Montero bolt up to the transmission from the 2.5 turbo diesel? We're talking 4 cylinder to 6 cylinder, will it bolt up to the tranny? Who says yes? Who says no?

Do the gasoline engines from the Montero bolt up to the transmission from the 2.5 turbo diesel? We're talking 4 cylinder to 6 cylinder, will it bolt up to the tranny? Both use a V5MT1 in manual config. Now I can't tell you for sure that it'll bolt up, since they may have retooled the bellhousing or something else to make it fit, but I guess you could theoretically swap those... What I can tell you is the gear ratios are different, and using the 2.5 TD behind the gasser trans may make it unusable, power band wise. Sorry I can't give you more, but unless I've seen it done, I don't want to speculate beyond giving you the numbers. ? That's funny. I do like it though.

From my research into this, I found at least 3 bellhouse patterns; man trans narrow for early 2.6 in Gen 1's, narrow auto trans pattern for 83 to 86 Chrysler 904 trans only, and later wide pattern for turbo (and Starion) motors in both man and auto (4 speed OD) forms. What I'm not sure of is whether the wide pattern non turbo 87 and up 4 cyl A/T is the same as the 3.0 V6 A/T pattern. All the 2.5 TD's have the wide pattern IIRC. The later trannys have electrical input from the ECU for the gas engine that may or may not work with a diesel ECU.

Now we're getting somewhere! Does anyone know if the wiring harness for the diesel and the gas engines are the same. I wouldn't think so, but you never know what these engineers are capable of. Who wants to snap a pic of the 87 an up V6 bolt pattern and post it for us? I'm going to ask on the POCUK board for a pic of the 2.5. We can compare. I can't believe there is no list of tranny codes on this internet of ours. Thanks guys.
