Getting the Wheeling Fever
My folks live really far from me (Hawaii), and are in the market for a decent 4x4 vehicle, since they just trashed their AWD mini-van (4500 bucks of damage... lol). I'd love to come inspect what they're going to buy, but that 700 bucks just isn't in my budget... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I have a little bit of knowledge about what is considered 'good' and 'bad' in 4-wheel tech, but I couldn't think of a good stock 4x4 vehicle other than some of the Jeeps that I know.

Anyone have any good suggestions of stock 4-bys that they can take on the many rocky trails out in Hawaii?

By good I mostly mean that someone without a whole lot of 4-wheeling knowledge won't likely break much, and maybe if they broke something it wouldn't break their bank.

Thanks!

personally, if i were you, id find an older toyota pickup (81-84) with the solid front axle. they seem to take a fair amount of abuse. my best friend has an 84 4Runner with a solid front axle, and the only things we can seem to brake are the things inside (US!!! lol long story, for another post). but thats my best opinion.

seems like the available selection in Hawaii would be limited. A 93+ jeep cherokee would be good, easy on the bank, not too bad mpg, easy to drive, easy to get parts. I don't know what vehicles are most prevalent there, if I were you I would check out the classifieds, check out vehicles that are in your range, that are 4x4 and bring your selection here and then everyone will be glad to give you a mouth full! maybe even consider posting in OT to get a lot of different responses!
peace

I'm not sure what island they're on, but here .

Other than that, I'd look for Land Cruisers. Pricy in HI because Toyota's normally retain their value very well there, but well worth it, IMHO.

Good luck!

I think Jeep would be thier best bet because there are so many around over there that parts would be easy to locate as well as a good Jeep mechanic.
