Getting the Wheeling Fever
It started this winter. On cold mornings the starter sounded like it was not engaging the engine and was just spinning freely. I would let of the ignition and try again. Eventually it would catch just fine. Now it is happening again every now and then but the cold is not a factor. There is never any grinding, it sounds like there is no resistance and it spins fast. Should i replace it before i get stranded?

Thanks, <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

The "spinout" part of the gear assembly on the starter is dirty! You can take it apart and give it a good cleaning.. New ones are available but are near the cost of a complete rebuilt starter.

Thord...yes, it sounds like the bendix is not popping out and engaging the flywheel like it should. I would check all of my connections first...if those are good I'd just replace the starter. They're under 100$ and 2 bolts are all that holds her up there! I've replaced my starter twice...the first was the original and the second was a remanufactured that lasted a whole 2 weeks.

This just happened to me a couple months ago! Bendix was sticking.
A rebuilt starter at auto zone is pretty cheap. It will jump right in there and you prbably wont have to worry about it for another 15 years
